S3eidat OS is a complete operating system — its own boot splash, greeter, window manager, dock, taskbar, settings and seventeen apps, all built from scratch. It runs Windows software through Wine and Proton, reads your real Steam and Epic libraries, and keeps a public ledger of exactly what works, what half-works, and what never will.

How it's built

Borrowed where it's sensible. Original where it's seen.

Writing a kernel would be a worse operating system, not a better one. So S3eidat OS takes the same shape as every shipped product in this category — SteamOS, webOS, Chrome OS — and spends all of its originality above the compositor, where you actually look.

S3eidatShell original

Boot splash, greeter, lock screen, window manager, dock, taskbar, Start menu, Spotlight, Mission Control, Control Centre, Action Centre, Settings, the icon set, the sound set, the wallpapers, and seventeen apps. Roughly 20,000 lines.

S3eidat Bridge original

A small local service with no dependencies. It reads your real Start Menu or .desktop entries, your real Steam libraryfolders.vdf, your real Epic manifests — and launches them. It also runs real shell commands with a persistent working directory (what makes the Terminal and Code genuine), talks to Ollama for a model on your own GPU, manages Wine prefixes, mounts cloud remotes through rclone, and drives ClamAV. Loopback only; refuses any origin but the shell's own; never runs a downloaded installer without your confirmation.

labwc Wayland compositor

Configured to be invisible: client-side decorations, no titlebars, no shadows, and no compositor keybindings — so the shortcut list in Settings is the whole truth.

Wine · Proton · DXVK · VKD3D compatibility

The same stack the Steam Deck ships. Wine runs applications, Proton runs games, DXVK and VKD3D translate Direct3D to Vulkan.

Arch Linux base

Chosen for one reason: it ships with no desktop branding to strip out. GRUB and Plymouth are re-themed; nothing else has a face.

Linux 6.x kernel

NVIDIA, AMD and Intel drivers are all installed at once. The kernel picks at boot, so moving the disk into another machine still works.

The ledger

What works, what half-works, and what never will.

Every distribution's website has a features list. This is the other list. If something doesn't work, you should find out here rather than three days after you've wiped Windows.

If you play Valorant, Fortnite, or most Call of Duty — stop here.

Those games use kernel-level anti-cheat that requires a Windows driver, and it refuses to load on Linux by design. This is not a bug, a missing package, or something a future release fixes. Keep a Windows partition — the installer offers dual boot and leaves it in the boot menu.

The image is a live USB: boot it, try the whole desktop without touching your disk, and install only if you like it.

Flash a USB

Getting the image onto a stick.

You need a USB drive of 8 GB or more. Everything on it will be erased. Verify the checksum first — a half-downloaded image fails in confusing ways much later.

Rufus — the one that works most reliably

  1. Get Rufus from rufus.ie. It's a single portable .exe.
  2. Insert the USB stick. Rufus should select it under Device — check it's the right one.
  3. Boot selection → Select → pick the .iso.
  4. Partition scheme: GPT, Target system: UEFI (non CSM). Use MBR/BIOS only for a pre-2012 machine.
  5. Leave the filesystem as Rufus sets it. Press Start. If it offers DD Image mode, take it.
  6. Wait for READY, then eject the drive properly.

Before you reboot

  1. Suspend BitLocker if your Windows drive is encrypted, or you'll be asked for the recovery key.
  2. Turn off Fast Startup — Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do. It leaves NTFS in a dirty state that Linux refuses to write to.
  3. Turn off Secure Boot in the firmware.
  4. Reboot and hold the boot-menu key: F12 (Dell, Lenovo), F9 (HP), F8 (Asus), F11 (MSI, some ASRock), Esc (many others).
Install

From live USB to a machine that boots on its own.

The live session is the whole desktop — open apps, poke around, decide. When you're ready, the installer is one command and asks before it does anything irreversible.

  1. Boot the stick and try it

    Firmware POST, the S3eidat splash, then the desktop. Nothing has touched your disk yet. Check that Wi-Fi, sound, and your display resolution all work — that's what a live session is for.

  2. Open a terminal and run the installer

    It detects UEFI or BIOS, lists your disks with what's currently on them, and asks for a filesystem, hostname, username and time zone.

  3. Confirm twice

    It will not write anything until you type the disk's name and then the word ERASE. The disk you booted from is never offered.

  4. It partitions, copies, and installs the bootloader

    GPT with a 1 GB EFI partition, btrfs with subvolumes (or ext4), optional LUKS encryption, genfstab, GRUB with the S3eidat theme, and an initramfs with early KMS for all three GPU vendors so there's no flicker between stages.

  5. Reboot

    Pull the stick. It comes up on its own into the S3eidat boot menu, then the setup wizard, once.

Dual boot with Windows

If Windows is found, the installer offers to keep it in the boot menu via os-prober. Install to a different disk, or shrink your Windows partition from Windows' own Disk Management first.

Encryption

LUKS2 on the root filesystem, set up during install. You'll type the passphrase at every boot, before the desktop appears.

If it doesn't boot

Boot the stick again, arch-chroot into the installed system, and re-run grub-install. The install log is kept at /var/log/s3eidat-install.log.

First boot

Nine screens, then it's yours.

The setup wizard runs once, before there's any account to sign in to. Every choice is a live setting you can change later — nothing here is a one-way door.

Language & region

English or العربية — Arabic flips the entire shell right-to-left. Keyboard layout, time zone, 12- or 24-hour clock.

Network

Pick a network and connect. Everything works offline too.

Your account

Name, username, PIN, and a picture. This becomes the account you unlock the machine with.

How it looks

Light, dark or automatic; eight accents; four wallpapers. It previews live as you choose.

Your hardware

Read from the machine, not guessed: processor, memory, firmware, BIOS version, and which GPU driver is active.

Windows apps

The compatibility ledger again, with the anti-cheat warning, and a switch to set up a Wine prefix now.

The assistant

Run a model locally with Ollama, or connect s3eidatGPT, or neither — it operates the machine either way.

Your files

Link OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox. They appear in Files like any other folder.

Privacy

Both switches default to the private setting. There is no telemetry service to opt out of.

Build from source

The image is one command.

mkarchiso needs a Linux host. If you're on Linux already it's one line; from Windows or macOS, a container gives you the same result.

From Windows — one script

Right-click distro\build-on-windows.ps1Run with PowerShell. It enables the two Windows features WSL2 needs, asks you to restart, then finishes on its own: pulls an Arch root filesystem, installs the build tools, and writes the image into out\. It touches no disks and asks before the restart.

Two things to know. The container needs --privileged because mkarchiso mounts loop devices. And [multilib] must be enabled in /etc/pacman.conf — Wine and Steam need the 32-bit libraries, and the build warns you if it isn't.

Limits

Where this isn't the right answer.

A page that only lists strengths isn't much use when you're deciding whether to wipe a working machine. Here is where S3eidat OS is genuinely the wrong choice.

Valorant, Fortnite, most Call of Duty, Destiny 2, PUBG. Dual boot, or stay on Windows.

You depend on the Adobe suite

Photoshop is partly workable under Wine; Premiere, After Effects and Lightroom are not. GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Kdenlive and DaVinci Resolve are the real alternatives here.

You need macOS software

Final Cut, Logic, Xcode. A .app is Mach-O against Apple's own frameworks — there is no path to running it on Linux, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

Your workplace requires Office desktop

Office 2016 and earlier run under Wine with effort; the 365 desktop apps don't reliably. The web versions are complete, and LibreOffice reads and writes .docx, .xlsx and .pptx with the metric-compatible fonts installed so layout survives.

The Terminal app runs real commands with a real working directory through the bridge, but over pipes rather than a pseudo-terminal. Non-interactive commands are genuine; vim, htop and ssh need a real TTY and the app says so instead of hanging.
